Ferit Kuyas (born in 1955 in Istanbul, Turkey) has embraced photography after having following studies in law and architecture. His first visit in Shanghai for commissioned work marked a watershed in his connexion with China for he went back there many times thereafter. In “City of Ambition” (2009) he proposes a personal and contradictory view of Chongqing – one of the largest and thus vivid city in the world – in which places appear almost depopulated or under-construction. As many of his contemporaries who are fascinated by Chinese unequalled urban burgeoning, Ferit Kuyas attempts to draw a picture of a typical Chinese city that has almost lost the credentials to be a proper metropolis, as if it became disqualified.
