Although there is no official pride parade in Beijing, that doesn’t mean that there isn’t anything LGBT related to do in our fair capital this month. Without heading to Shanghai for Shanghai Pride, this is one of the first pride-focused events right here, with more sure to come.
This Tuesday June 9, the Beijing American Center will show two films: Lead with Love (in English) and Mama Rainbow (in Chinese with English subtitles). The whole program is in English and kicks off at 7pm. Film screenings will be followed by a Q&A in both English and Chinese, check out Douban for more information.
The films highlight the difficulty for people to come out as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, or Transgender as a result of societal pressures and expectations, and the impact it has on families. Lead with Love is a film produced by a research team from the University of Utah, reaching out to parents who struggle with their children’s sexual orientation. Mama Rainbow, produced by Beijing’s own Fan Popo follows the lives of six mothers to LGBT children throughout China. The film expresses hope for the future as more Chinese families come out to support their LGBT children.
Please remember that large bags aren’t allowed into the center, and to bring photo ID to gain entry.
