The Local has very quietly released their spring/summer menu. “We kept the old favorites, and dropped some of the items that didn’t quite fit,” said Owner and Manager Kenn Bermel. “We’ve also separated the pick-your-own pizza toppings menu to make it clearer and easier to read.”

One new facet of the menu is that appetizers come in small and sharing-sized portions. They have added eight items that have a both a small and sharing option, so people can sample or share with friends. We tried several popular ones: Spinach Artichoke Dip (RMB 48), Mini Fish and Chips (RMB 20, Small), Basil Pesto Hummus (RMB 20, Small), Chicken Satay Skewers (RMB 20, Small), and Stuffed Banana Peppers (RMB 25, Small).

The spinach artichoke dip is served with garlic sticks and tortilla chips. We love the sliced cheese on it. There is good news for vegetarians – there are now over 10 vegetarian items on the menu, and even two vegan options. The Local plans to make a list of the menu items that can be made vegan without sacrificing awesomeness.

By popular demand, Mini Fish and Chips is back, and we’re glad they did. They use a beer batter with malt vinegar and tartar sauce. The crispy deep-fried fish, dipped in tartar sauce, washed down with a sip of cold beer? That’s summer!

The chicken satay skewers will serve as a reminder that you need to visit Soiutheast Asia again this year. They’re served with a peanut paste, lime, and secret spice sauce. And we love the basil pesto hummus, a mix of olive oil, chickpeas, garlic, and basil, served with vegetable sticks and toast. Again, yummy.

For chili-lovers, here’s something — stuffed banana peppers. The small one wasn’t small, and it was properly spicy. A bite of the pepper with sausage stuffing and you’ll feel the burn, especially on your lips and tongue.

It’s taken all of our strength to save the drink for last. We have found true love in a cocktail – the Naughty Pear (RMB 40, or 30 at happy hour). I have to admit it was so good that I had to come back for another one the next day. It is mixed with housemade cinnamon-infused gin, fresh pear juice, finished with pear slices and a cinnamon rim. Attention cinnamon lovers (and gin lovers and pear lovers and drink lovers), be careful with this one, one sip and you will may never the Local. Seriously, what’s in there? Opium?

Sorry, we could say more, but we’re going to step away here and go have another Naughty Pear. Don’t forget Tuesday Quiz and Wednesday wings night. Brunch, such as pancakes and an eggs benedict bagel, are now available every Saturday and Sunday from 11am till 3pm.
