It’s that time of the year, men: time for the fresh-faced, clean shaven among you to put that razor away and grow your facial hair for charity. The Beijing version of the worldwide event to promote men’s health awareness known as Movember is locally dubbed maovember, and its kickoff party is tonight at The Corner Melt.

The whole affair lasts a month and the money raised goes to charity — this year the funds raised by Movember will go to Orbis China, which arranges for people in rural parts of the country to receive sight-restoring cataract surgery.

Read all about the event on their website here, or better yet turn up at the Corner Melt Sunday evening at 6 to get all the details in their stubbly glory.

In the meantime, here’s a list of currently scheduled and planned events from the maovember website:

Sunday, November 02, 6 PM to Midnight
THE CORNER MELT
Get a Bourbon, a hot (grilled cheese) and a beer with Jimi Sides at The Corner Melt
— Knob Creek shot and PBR chaser for rmb30. While supplies — two bottles of booze, two cases of PBR — last.
— Brass Monkeys courtesy of Andy Horowitz for those who enjoy vitamin C — it includes OJ — in their drink.
— A contest — either mini-putt or nerf “horse” — to challenge your motor skills. Small fee, big prizes.
Proceeds from all three activities to charity. Plus the 2014 maovember pins will be hot off the presses. Like last year, they are 50 yuan each, with all money to charity. Unlike last year, a list of select venues will have deals for those wearing pins (see this page).

Friday, November 07, From 8 PM
PADDY O’SHEA’S
Get all kinds of shots at Paddy O’Shea’s as manager Paul Rochon hosts a Friday night maovember party:
— Shot on goal: Test your stick-handling skills against the goalie from Beijing-based hockey team The Oilers. Three shots for 50 yuan.
— Shot in hand (okay, it’s a glass, not a shot). East Meets West will sponsor wine — including a winter-warming mulled option — for rmb25 per glass.
— Shot to win: Paddy O’Shea’s will sell 20-yuan draw tickets all month long. The grand prize is a magnum of Champagne to be awarded on November 28.
Proceeds from all three activities go to charity. Maovember pins will also be available for 50 yuan. Wear yours at Paddy O’Shea’s during November and get a ten-percent discount on drinks.
