Exploring China during Mao era and after the end of World War II was not an easy task. Nevertheless, there were some rare (lucky) and courageous camera-operators who managed to enter Chinese borders and portray its society. This is the case for the Air Vice Marshall of the British Royal Air Force Arthur Leonard Fiddament (1896-1976), nicknamed ‘Fido’. He left a unique collection of color photographs taken in 1945, which depicted everyday life and cityscapes in cities such as Shanghai, Chongqing, and Kunming.
