As the fourth year of Beijing Design Week prepares to descend on the capital, we must prepare ourselves for a slew of wordy descriptions about amazing feats of industrial and environmentally aware design. We will spare you the spiderweb that is the BJDW website and dish out a handful of amazing things going on, that you should probably check out if you are interested in how designers are paving the way for the capital’s future aesthetics during this week-long showcase.

The Bar at Migas

The heads behind Fake Music Media continue on with their Music and Design (M.A.D.) subsidiary, organizing an interesting series of talks from artists and musicians including Helen Feng, ABS Graffiti Crew, Solveig Suess, and Michael Seifert. The topics here aim to explore the symbiotic relationship between music and design and will be followed by some late night audio visual action featuring DJs Bruna, Tiger & Woods, and VJs Telenoika. The Bibliorium

Cha’er Hutong #3

Take a load off from your explorations of BJDW’s epicenter in the Dashilar area at this pop up reading room organized by Bactagon and Chinese art magazine LEAP. Embracing the origins of book production, collection, retail, and display, The Bibliorium will engage local audiences with one week of programming, including a three-day symposium, curated library, magazine archive, site-inspired bookshelf, reading room, and cafe.

Surge Art Presents: The White Room

Sureno Sunken Garden, The Opposite House

Experience this live art event as Surge converts the Sureno Sunken Garden into a blank white canvas that over the course of the afternoon will be transformed as people mingle and two artists incorporate the happenings of the space into an all encompassing living breathing work of art. A wonderful indoor and outdoor party set over several rooms, with amazing food and drinks from The Opposite House and newly opened Bao House.

A Workshop on Film and Architecture

The Orange 

Join this multidisciplinary workshop on how film/video can be used as a means for research and an instrument to capture the essence of design. Throughout the three day course, students will work in groups to develop neighborhood narratives that analyze specific topics related to various parts of the city. These projects will then be screened together as a sequential rendering of architecture in the capital.

Loop Beijing

On Select Routes of City Buses

While you take one of the many city buses to the various sectors of BJDW, enjoy a route specific soundtrack created by curated group of Beijing’s weirdo sound artists. The project, organized by filmmakers Maya Rudolph and Xiaowei Wang will feature a custom app for streaming these tracks and will be debuted at an opening party at The Other Place on September 27.
