One of the longest-operating brands in Asian aviation is getting a new name and a new look, as Dragonair becomes Cathay Dragon.

The move is designed to highlight the two airlines’ relationship and strengthen their branding. The dragon logo that has adorned Dragonair planes for decades will be replaced by Cathay Pacific’s abstract bird in flight, on two backgrounds: one retaining Cathay Pacific’s green and another using Dragonair’s signature red.

However, Dragonair’s dragon has not vanished entirely  it has just moved to the nose of the aircraft.

Dragonair is well known to China travelers, as most of its routes are to destinations here. At one time, Dragonair served only cities in China, with Cathay Pacific handling the rest of Asia.

Cathay Pacific and its parent company, Swire Pacific, have held significant stakes in Dragonair for 25 years, as does China National Aviation Corporation, the majority shareholder in Air China and Air Macau.
