Winter is here and here to stay, and UK-based pizza institution Pizza Express know what we want to eat: heartier salads, pizzas, pastas, sharing with friends, pumpkin-based dishes, and ham. Mostly the ham, it’s on their pizzas, in their salads, and on their charcuterie platters.
If you’ve never been to Pizza Express before, let us tell you, it’s all about the dough. Hence, why one of their simplest offerings, the dough balls, are one of our favorite dishes on their menu. This season, the fluffy round carby treats come with a bolognese sauce and meatballs (RMB 49).
If you’re looking for more sharing dishes, the antipasti board has been pimped with a pumpkin dip that is both creamy and fresh (RMB 136). If you don’t get it for the dip, then get it for the parma ham and smoked salmon.
On the pizza front, there’s a white-sauce based cake topped off with mushrooms, ham, and mozarella, La Regina, on the menu (RMB 129). It’s almost like spaghetti carbonara on a pizza (pictured above). Almost. If that doesn’t warm your heart than we don’t know what will. There’s also a healthier option, the Gamba Piccante, with an arrabiatta sauce and prawns: less cheese but still packs the flavor that we are used to with the Pizza Express’ pizzas (RMB 138).
For a spicier version, try the American Hottest, a satisfying but almost mind-blowingly spicy tomato-based pizza with chilies, jalapenos, pepperoni, mince, and two types of cheese (RMB 138).
Then there’s the Primavera, a salad that comes with the aforementioned ham, peas, plenty of leaves, boiled eggs, avocado, and bread sticks made from their famous soft pizza dough (RMB 106). The dressing is creamy, but doesn’t overpower the other ingredients’ individual flavors.
New dishes are available throughout all four Pizza Express stores, with the latest addition to their ever-growing empire being the Liangmaqiao store at The Grant Summit which opened in late September.
