Earlier this month, police in Zhengzhou, Henan province made the high-profile arrest of 28-year-old Wang Chao Jun for administrating “Dan Mei Fiction Web”, the popular fanfiction (fanfic) archive where one could find such juicy fanfic styles as male-on-male “slash”, which UrbanDic defines as “involving pairing two male or female characters together; characters are commonly shown with a slash in between.” Interestingly enough, the majority of those who both read and write dude-on-dude slash pieces, as the Daily Dot reports, are “mostly polite, introverted young women in their 20’s” who sometimes refer to themselves as 腐女 (rotten women). In addition, slash is only one of many, many different types of fanfic, which “in general is rarely more shocking than your average romance novel.” So why have authorities chosen to make such a big fuss about it?
