The next LGBT-themed film presented by the Beijing American Center, in light of June being Pride Month, is a Taiwanese film called The Wedding Banquet.
The film, directed and co-written by Academy Award-winning director Ang Lee, and nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, explores cross-cultural and generational conflicts as viewed through the story of a Taiwanese gay man who has arranged to marry a Chinese woman in New York so as to appease his family’s demands.
The film explores how two different cultures deal with homosexuality, the differences between Western and Chinese attitudes towards homosexuality, what it is like to be gay in a Chinese family, and the pressures on members of the LGBT community when having to hide the truth.
The film, which is in English and Chinese is subtitled and will be shown at 6.30pm. The Q&A session following the film will be held in English. Please remember to bring photo ID to gain entry to the center, and that large bags will not be allowed in. This is the douban link to the event for more information.
