This course will be delivered in English.

This two-day email communication course targets employees working in multinational companies. It focuses on the structure and strategies of email communication in the workplace. Participants of the course will learn how to think strategically before writing, and write in a clear, professional and persuasive way.

Who Should Attend
Local Chinese managers and staff who need to communicate extensively in written English, such as staff in management positions and in business functions such as HR, finance, marketing, sales, government affairs, PR, engineering, R&D, procurement and IT.

Course Objectives
The course aims to develop the following mindsets and skills in written communication:
• Being clear – Writing clearly and logically, without causing confusion or misunderstanding
• Being professional – Writing professionally, politely and being aware of cultural differences
• Being strategic – How to think and write strategically and be persuasive, especially when writing to senior managers and executives

Course Content
This course covers the following sessions and topics:

Day 1 – Essentials of Written Communication

Morning Session – Using the Written Word
• Deciding when to write and when NOT to write
• How to catch a reader’s attention and make sure your writing get read
• How to be clear about your purpose and request and encourage response
• How to structure your writing logically and clearly to match readers’ needs

Afternoon Session – Describing and Reporting
• How to describe problems, situations and processes in a logical way
• How to address reader’s concerns and clarify things
• How to write accurate, brief, well-structured reports and summaries
• How to write effective meeting minutes

Day 2 – Writing for Different Purposes

Morning Session – Persuasion
• How to request support and assistance from senior managers
• The principles of persuasion
• How to persuade senior managers to give approval
• How to write to a large audience

Afternoon Session – Dealing with Difficult Situations
• How to advise about problems and share negative news
• How to respond to difficult or unreasonable requests
• How to complain and deal with complaints
• How to chase people for actions

Training Activities
Example analysis – Participants will analyze, under the guidance of the trainer, both good and bad writing examples to discover and understand certain principles and skills

Learning points – Participants will learn a set of well-summarized writing tips and skills

Case study – Participants will apply the principles they have learned to writing with a case study closely related to the participants’ business and jobs

Language absorption – Participants read and absorb good use of language from carefully selected examples and learn to improve their own writing styles

About the Trainer
Mike Oswell is an experienced and successful business leader, business developer and manager. He has over 30 years experience as a senior executive in a global consulting firm in the field of environmental engineering, including as Asia Managing Director. Having worked in over 60 countries, his experience covers government clients, the oil industry, pharmaceutical, manufacturing and engineering industries and extends to US, Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific. While in Singapore he started the Asia campus of the company’s in-house university and in recent years has been active in China in the areas of executive education. He has taught writing skills to executives and managers in Airbus, BP, Caterpillar, Ernst & Young, GE Healthcare, IBM, Microsoft, Siemens and individuals from over 30 further multinational companies.

Oswell holds a BA and MA from Cambridge University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

"Writing for Results: Successful Email Communication" is a two-day course from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. that will be held in the AmCham China Conference Center. Coffee, lunch and light refreshments will be provided during breaks.
