This image, released by the BBC, shows the size of the search area currently in place for missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, superimposed over locations that help give a sense of scale to viewers who may not be as familiar with South East Asian geography. The search area is 1.5% of the entire Earth's surface, or a little bit less than 1 Europe. In other words, it's gigantic.
