Meet Chemist, Author and Mountaineer Arlene Blum

11:45 AM - 2:00 PM, Monday, April 20, 2015 - AmCham China Conference Center

From leading expeditions to some of the worlds highest and most challenging mountains to spearheading scientific research to protect human health and the global environment, Arlene Blum has led an extraordinary life. In this dramatic presentation, Blum shares the best photos and stories from her memoir, Breaking Trail: A Climbing Life. The book illustrates both her scientific research and her mountaineering expeditions to the world's highest and most dangerous mountains.

Blum led the first American – and all-female – ascent of Annapurna I, considered one of the world’s most dangerous and difficult mountains, co-led the first women’s team to climb Denali, completed the Great Himalayan Traverse across the mountain regions of Bhutan, Nepal and India, and hiked the length of the European Alps with her infant daughter on her back.

Her research and policy work has contributed to preventing the use of billions of pounds of harmful flame retardant chemicals in children's sleepwear, furniture, electronics and other products worldwide. Her current “mountain,” which she considers her life’s most challenging and important, is to educate decision makers in industry and government to reduce the use of entire classes of harmful chemicals.

Blum was selected by The Guardian newspaper as one of the world’s 100 most inspiring women and as the National Women’s History Project's 100 “Women Taking the Lead to Save Our Planet.” She is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and was elected to the Hall of Mountaineering Excellence.
