Among the many extraordinary circumstances surrounding the event that continue to come to light as the search for answers continues, some officials are now speculating the plane may have exploded mid-air with debris spread over a wide area.

Officials say it would take a large bomb smuggled into the cargo hold or a catastrophic technical failure to cause an explosion big enough to destroy the plane.

Currently, the search for the missing Malaysia Airlines plane involves 34 aircraft and 40 ships, and yet no trace has been found.
