Much to the delight of film fans and thrill-seekers, Universal Studios is set to open in Beijing. Construction on the new 51-acre theme park is set to start in late 2014 in Tongzhou district with hopes that the park will open in January 2018.
An article in The Hollywood Reporter states that the project has a budget of a cool RMB12 billion and will be a joint venture between Universal Studios and Beijing Tourism Group, a local state-owned company.
Universal Studios already has a presence in Asia with parks in Osaka, Japan and Singapore. In picking Beijing, the LA-based studios has chosen not to follow Disney and Dreamworks who are both planning parks around Shanghai.
Moreover, the article goes on to mention Beijing’s planned new monorail, which will start from Wangjing and terminate at the new attraction. That’s right, Beijing’s going to get a monorail!
