Trapped behind a rusty wired-up gate, the giant Tibetan mastiff growled at anyone who approached his small metal cage. Inside was a water bowl that had not been changed for ages, its foul-smelling contents covered with film of green slime. The cage floor was completely covered with trash and feces.
We were first alerted to his condition when a friend called for help saying there was a Tibetan mastiff that had been locked up in a cage for six months – no one wanted to take care of the dog because he was so big and aggressive.
Our first meeting was indeed terrifying, but I did not agree with the notion that he was too aggressive to take in. So a week later we decided to rescue him no matter what. So there I was, standing hesitatingly in front of the rusty gate with a pocket full of meatballs and dog treats. I was pretty sure I was going to be bitten.
What happened next was a complete surprise.
As soon as I let him out of the cage, the dog stopped growling as he quietly and curiously explored his surroundings. He followed my steps, leaned on my legs and looked into my eyes.
I didn’t see any sign of aggression – just pure puppy love – after all he was only ten months old.
This mighty and fierce looking mastiff turned out to be the most gentle, loving, and loyal dog.
At Cuddles International Pet Resort, A Ao is a now a completely new dog. The groomers have given him a new look, and the vets and nurses are making sure he has a healthy and happy lifestyle.
Everybody loves him – especially kids. Visitors routinely ask to have their photos taken with him and he is always patient with people, even though he tends to be a little shy around other dogs.
Unfortunately, A Ao’s huge size (he currently weighs around 40kg now, and will be around 55-60kg when mature) means that not many families can afford to look after him. His gentle nature makes him less hyperactive than a Labrador, but he does need a yard to play. And as with any puppy, he needs a lot of love and attention too.
Tibetan mastiffs are not known for their smarts, but A Ao knows to follow the leash, how to sit for food and how to give those universally-irresistible innocent faces when he makes a mistake. He also loves to lie on your feet when he does not want you to leave. We hope that there is a family out there can provide this huge bundle of love and joy a warm and caring home.
If you think A Ao is the dog for you, please call Cuddles Pet to arrange a visit.
